    The Effect of Teacher Professional Development on Implementing Engineering in Elementary Schools

    Increased attention on the implementation of engineering education into elementary school classrooms aims to start preparing students early for potential engineering careers. In order to efficiently and effectively add engineering concepts to the curriculum, appropriate development and facilitation of engineering design challenges are required. Therefore, professional development programs are necessary to educate teachers about engineering and how to adequately teach it. This paper explores the effects of an engineering professional development program for practicing teachers. The program included training elementary teachers about how to implement units from Engineering is Elementary (EiE) by the Science Museum of Boston into their classes. Semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted, both prior to and following the implementation of the EiE units over an academic year. The interviews were transcribed and coded using open-coding, resulting in the development of a codebook. The codes were further analyzed until salient themes emerged that can be used to improve the training and better understand how teachers integrate engineering into their classrooms. The results show that many teachers need training to learn about engineering practices, as well as pedagogical guidance on how to incorporate engineering concepts into their lessons. However, not surprisingly, limited resources such as time, money, materials, and knowledge restrict efficient curricula implementation. We believe these findings reemphasize the need for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics professional development programs to educate K–12 teachers about engineering and will be useful to others interested in integrating engineering into K–12 curricula

    Can differences in phosphorus uptake kinetics explain the distribution of cattail and sawgrass in the Florida Everglades?

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cattail (<it>Typha domingensis</it>) has been spreading in phosphorus (P) enriched areas of the oligotrophic Florida Everglades at the expense of sawgrass (<it>Cladium mariscus </it>spp. <it>jamaicense</it>). Abundant evidence in the literature explains how the opportunistic features of <it>Typha </it>might lead to a complete dominance in P-enriched areas. Less clear is how <it>Typha </it>can grow and acquire P at extremely low P levels, which prevail in the unimpacted areas of the Everglades.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Apparent P uptake kinetics were measured for intact plants of <it>Cladium </it>and <it>Typha </it>acclimated to low and high P at two levels of oxygen in hydroponic culture. The saturated rate of P uptake was higher in <it>Typha </it>than in <it>Cladium </it>and higher in low-P acclimated plants than in high-P acclimated plants. The affinity for P uptake was two-fold higher in <it>Typha </it>than in <it>Cladium</it>, and two- to three-fold higher for low-P acclimated plants compared to high-P acclimated plants. As <it>Cladium </it>had a greater proportion of its biomass allocated to roots, the overall uptake capacity of the two species at high P did not differ. At low P availability, <it>Typha </it>increased biomass allocation to roots more than <it>Cladium</it>. Both species also adjusted their P uptake kinetics, but <it>Typha </it>more so than <it>Cladium</it>. The adjustment of the P uptake system and increased biomass allocation to roots resulted in a five-fold higher uptake per plant for <it>Cladium </it>and a ten-fold higher uptake for <it>Typha</it>.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Both <it>Cladium </it>and <it>Typha </it>adjust P uptake kinetics in relation to plant demand when P availability is high. When P concentrations are low, however, <it>Typha </it>adjusts P uptake kinetics and also increases allocation to roots more so than <it>Cladium</it>, thereby improving both efficiency and capacity of P uptake. <it>Cladium </it>has less need to adjust P uptake kinetics because it is already efficient at acquiring P from peat soils (e.g., through secretion of phosphatases, symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, nutrient conservation growth traits). Thus, although <it>Cladium </it>and <it>Typha </it>have qualitatively similar strategies to improve P-uptake efficiency and capacity under low P-conditions, <it>Typha </it>shows a quantitatively greater response, possibly due to a lesser expression of these mechanisms than <it>Cladium</it>. This difference between the two species helps to explain why an opportunistic species such as <it>Typha </it>is able to grow side by side with <it>Cladium </it>in the P-deficient Everglades.</p

    Associations between dietary iron and zinc intakes, and between biochemical iron and zinc status in women

    Iron and zinc are found in similar foods and absorption of both may be affected by food compounds, thus biochemical iron and zinc status may be related. This cross-sectional study aimed to: (1) describe dietary intakes and biochemical status of iron and zinc; (2) investigate associations between dietary iron and zinc intakes; and (3) investigate associations between biochemical iron and zinc status in a sample of premenopausal women aged 18&ndash;50 years who were recruited in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia. Usual dietary intakes were assessed using a 154-item food frequency questionnaire (n = 379). Iron status was assessed using serum ferritin and hemoglobin, zinc status using serum zinc (standardized to 08:00 collection), and presence of infection/inflammation using C-reactive protein (n = 326). Associations were explored using multiple regression and logistic regression. Mean (SD) iron and zinc intakes were 10.5 (3.5) mg/day and 9.3 (3.8) mg/day, respectively. Median (interquartile range) serum ferritin was 22 (12&ndash;38) &mu;g/L and mean serum zinc concentrations (SD) were 12.6 (1.7) &mu;mol/L in fasting samples and 11.8 (2.0) &mu;mol/L in nonfasting samples. For each 1 mg/day increase in dietary iron intake, zinc intake increased by 0.4 mg/day. Each 1 &mu;mol/L increase in serum zinc corresponded to a 6% increase in serum ferritin, however women with low serum zinc concentration (AM fasting &lt; 10.7 &mu;mol/L; AM nonfasting &lt; 10.1 &mu;mol/L) were not at increased risk of depleted iron stores (serum ferritin &lt;15 &mu;g/L; p = 0.340). Positive associations were observed between dietary iron and zinc intakes, and between iron and zinc status, however interpreting serum ferritin concentrations was not a useful proxy for estimating the likelihood of low serum zinc concentrations and women with depleted iron stores were not at increased risk of impaired zinc status in this cohort

    Selection of Metastatic Breast Cancer Cells Based on Adaptability of Their Metabolic State

    A small subpopulation of highly adaptable breast cancer cells within a vastly heterogeneous population drives cancer metastasis. Here we describe a function-based strategy for selecting rare cancer cells that are highly adaptable and drive malignancy. Although cancer cells are dependent on certain nutrients, e.g., glucose and glutamine, we hypothesized that the adaptable cancer cells that drive malignancy must possess an adaptable metabolic state and that such cells could be identified using a robust selection strategy. As expected, more than 99.99% of cells died upon glutamine withdrawal from the aggressive breast cancer cell line SUM149. The rare cells that survived and proliferated without glutamine were highly adaptable, as judged by additional robust adaptability assays involving prolonged cell culture without glucose or serum. We were successful in isolating rare metabolically plastic glutamine-independent (Gln-ind) variants from several aggressive breast cancer cell lines that we tested. The Gln-ind cells overexpressed cyclooxygenase-2, an indicator of tumor aggressiveness, and they were able to adjust their glutaminase level to suit glutamine availability. The Gln-ind cells were anchorage-independent, resistant to chemotherapeutic drugs doxorubicin and paclitaxel, and resistant to a high concentration of a COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib. The number of cells being able to adapt to non-availability of glutamine increased upon prior selection of cells for resistance to chemotherapy drugs or resistance to celecoxib, further supporting a linkage between cellular adaptability and therapeutic resistance. Gln-ind cells showed indications of oxidative stress, and they produced cadherin11 and vimentin, indicators of mesenchymal phenotype. Gln-ind cells were more tumorigenic and more metastatic in nude mice than the parental cell line as judged by incidence and time of occurrence. As we decreased the number of cancer cells in xenografts, lung metastasis and then primary tumor growth was impaired in mice injected with parental cell line, but not in mice injected with Gln-ind cells

    Project LOBSTAQ : investigations on lobster (Homarus americanus) aquaculture, ecology and tertiary sewage treatment in controlled environmental systems

    Research was based on different aspects of incorporating Homarus Americanus cultural into the multi-trophic level marine aquaculture-wastewater treatment system of the Environmental Systems laboratory at Woods Hole. Experiments were directed .toward optimizing food sources available within the system, developing designs to facilitate high density lobster growth, and elucidating the ecology of Homarus. The aquaculture-wastewater treatment system uses secondary sewage effluent or its equivalent as a nutrient source for marine phytoplankton ponds which in turn are fed into raceways containing racks of bivalves. The bivalves produce soluble nutrients used to raise macroalgae, and solid material (biodeposits) used to raise various deposit feeders. Almost all the N and over 50% of the P is removed from the wastewater by the artificial food chain.Prepared under NSF Grant GY-1154

    Adolescents' views of food and eating: Identifying barriers to healthy eating

Multiple factors may influence an adolescent's susceptibility to this eating culture, and thus act as a barrier to healthy eating. Given the increasing prevalence of obesity amongst adolescents, the need to reduce these barriers has become a necessity. Twelve focus group discussions of single-sex groups of boys or girls ranging from early to-mid adolescence (N = 73) were employed to identify key perceptions of, and influences upon, healthy eating behaviour. Thematic analysis identified four key factors as barriers to healthy eating. These factors were: physical and psychological reinforcement of eating behaviour; perceptions of food and eating behaviour; perceptions of contradictory food-related social pressures; Q perceptions of the concept of healthy eating itself. Overall, healthy eating as a goal in its own right is notably absent from the data and would appear to be elided by competing pressures to eat unhealthily and to lose weight. This insight should inform the development of future food-related communications to adolescents.
